Mild steel is affordable, widely available, and easy to form, bend, or deep draw. However, untreated mild steel can rust. Modern coatings like zinc, nickel, or aluminium protect against corrosion and improve its appearance.

Medium and high-carbon steels are harder and more wear-resistant, making them ideal for knives, blades, and springs. These are typically supplied annealed but can be heat-treated for extra hardness and strength.
